Academics - Secondary

Below is a list of the general scope and sequence for the secondary classes at First Baptist School.

Because chapel is a vital part of our school, it is held every Tuesday and Thursday. Student participation is encouraged through testimonies and special music.

BIBLE 7 Basic Bible study for the purpose of producing dynamic Christians. This practical study of the Bible covers all five basics of the Christian life; salvation, the Word of God, prayer, witnessing and daily living.

DYNAMIC CHRISTIAN LIVING   Positive Action for Christ, Inc.
ENGLISH 7 Basic grammar study concentrated on building the foundation for future grammar courses. The emphasis is on usage of the eight parts of speech, diagramming, mechanics, and sentence structure. Vocabulary, spelling, and literature (Luther, Bunyan and Dickens) are also part of this course.

HISTORY 7/8 A study of American history. Students will receive a comprehensive overview of people and events from pre-colonial days through the 1980's.

MATH 7 Concepts include fractions, decimals, and percents, geometry (perimeter and circumference, area, and volume), ratios and proportions, exponents and scientific notation, statistics (mode, median and mean), and simple algebraic equations.

SIGN LANGUAGE 7/8 A course focused on reading and interpreting sign language in a ministry. Autobiographies and the culture of deaf people are also studied.
KEYBOARDING A beginning level course to teach the keyboard and to increase speed. Students will also learn proper format for term papers, business letters, and other personal and business papers.

MAVIS BEACON TEACHES TYPING
HOME EC A hands-on approach to homemaking skills. Students will learn cooking, sewing, crafts, and Christian womanhood.
CHRISTIAN MANHOOD Designed to teach boys how to become a Godly Christian man. Students will learn how to keep good personal hygiene, use tools, have a hard work ethic, work on some common components of a car, and live a life pleasing to God.

CHOIR
A vocal music class including basic music theory, vocal practice, and appreciation of classical and Christian music. Concerts are included in this course.
BAND An instrumental music program for students who have passed their first lesson book. Designed to increase musical ability by practice and experience with marches, symphonic music, church and gospel music. Concerts, special performances, and pep band are included in this course.


8th Grade

BIBLE 8 Practical study of the life and teachings of Christ in the Gospels. Through these lessons about Christ, students learn how to emulate the Son of God.

ENGLISH 8 Grammar study re-emphasizes earlier skills and builds on them. The emphasis is on more complex English usage, such as phrases, clauses, and verbals. Composition includes instruction in manuscript form, and writing summaries and book reports. Vocabulary, spelling and poetry are also part of this course.

The class list for each grade includes all classes available to a student in the respective year. Students will select classes based on their past record and specific schedule to fulfill FBS graduation requirements. The credit earned for each class is included under the class name.

GEOGRAPHY

World Geography and missions go hand in hand. Students will learn about the world, its peoples, cultures, religions, and their need for Christ. The classes will cover the world's countries, their capitals, and their social economic situations. Must time will be spent learning the topographical layout of the earth's countries and the boundaries of each political state.

Standard topics of first year algebra. Concepts include signed numbers, integer exponents (positive and negative), solving equations (substitution, elimination, and graphing), scientific notation, and English-metric conversions for volume and area.

An introduction to basic principles of physics. The student learns about matter (description, structure, chemistry, motion and energy), waves (vibrations, sound and light), and technology (engineering and electronics).

Practical study of the lives of some of the major characters in the Old Testament. Students will learn not only godly attributes to follow from the lives of great men and women, but also problem areas to avoid from the lives of the wicked.

Detailed examination of the fundamentals of writing and composition to solidify previous language study and prepare for more advanced composition and communications courses. Review of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and poetry are also part of this course.
